My Puy-de-Dôme, by Junior

Hello!
Latest news from Volvic :
Saturday 31st of May is the anniversary of the Volvic Sports Club.
On this occasion, there will be a gathering of long-time and more recent members at Champleboux, with a parade and a banquet with a dance afterwards. The festivities start at 20:30 and everybody (not just members of the club) are welcome!

Today, I have decided to speak about the 'Maison de la Pierre' , i.e. the 'House of Stone' in Volvic.
Volvic is known world-wide for its water (called "Volvic"!), but there is another treasure here: the black lava andesite stone called "pierre de Volvic". If you visit the 'House of Stone' museum, in its beautiful natural setting, the fabulous legacy of the local stone will be revealed. You will discover the Nugère volcano lava flow, and the history of the men who worked there from the thirteenth century on. Everybody who visits Volvic must see the House of Stone!
Speak to you all soon!
Junior

I live in the UK and am coming to the area for a holiday on the train with my husband and 1 year old and 4 year old sons at the end of August. We are staying for 2 nights in Clermont Ferrand and then 7 nights at the Indigo Campsite in Royat. What can you recommend that we can do without a car, using buses and trains. We would like to visit Volvic on the train - is the Château de Tournoël far to walk from the train station?

Hi annetteandbabes!
Royat is right next to Clermont. There's lots of buses and there's the train station (which is worth going to just for the architecture, though there are not many trains!). In Clermont you must take a ride the brand new tram (we're very proud of it)!
No, with kids, you will need a car to get up to the Tournoël castle next to Volvic. It's up a long windy road...
Unfortunately, without a (rented) car, you will not be able to see much of the countryside (a pity, we have some of the most fabulous volcano landscapes in the world!)... You can always visit Riom, Issoire, Brioude. These are fabulous towns all on the railway line not far from Clermont. Enjoy your hols here and don't hesitate to send more comments!
